Die Physiker
A Play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Murder rocks a psychiatric hospital. The culprit appears to be quickly identified: patient Ernst Heinrich Ernesti, who believes himself to be Albert Einstein, has strangled a nurse. Before him, Herbert Georg Beutler, known as “Newton,” murdered one of her colleagues. Both men are deemed criminally insane.
But the killings are far from over. Soon, the third “physicist” on the ward, Johann Wilhelm Möbius, will also become a murderer. Who is truly mad? And why are these three supposed physicists really confined to a psychiatric hospital?
With its razor-sharp wit and astonishing twists, Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s iconic comedy The Physicists keeps audiences in suspense until the very end. Featuring an epilogue by Wilke Weermann, this production explores the unsettling intersection of scientific responsibility, power, and moral accountability with biting humor and gripping theatricality
